stranger in a strange land

an odyssey through the mire of setting up on the internet

stranger still

Initially I was going to use this blog to publisise my website--www.lets-make-a-movie.co.uk--but then I thought that that would be too boring,so I then decided to try to make sense of the journey that brought me to this blog.

I'd always been intrigued by the thought of using the internet, but like a lot of folks thought that it was too complicated, technical etc

But then I thought what the hell, I can do this, so I started to investigate the hows and whens.

This lead me into the realms of the possibility of using it to earn money,a big plus 'cos my job has just ended.

So now I'm in deeper than ever!!!

Not only do I need to learn how to put websites up,but need to find out about how to earn money as well.

That's not all I need to do it fast, my last paycheck is on the 15th Jan 07.

My investigations led me to WYSIWYG programmes for the production of websites, they appear quite easy, you just type in and voila.

But then you have to post it to your newly created server account.

Now to all of you who are familiar with this you'll either be laughing or bored, but let me reassure the rest of us, that large majority, this didn't come easily to a white middle class 58 year old bloke, who had no training,no idea of codeing, html or anything, it is like learning a foreign language, and everyone knows how difficult that appears to the average englishman.

Now using the WYSIWYG was easy, just like a word processor, so I set up my very first website. Yahee!!!!

Setting it up is the next task--or should I say posting it--on my server.

Incidently I'd already gone through the tasks of signing up with a server, registering a domain name and setting up email--I found that part straight forward.

But now the jargon starts creeping in --you need to upload using FTP

wot the hell is this??

More research resulted in finding out that FTP stands for File Tranfer Protocol

So what

More research-- there's loads of freeware FTP programmes-- so I down load one--easy so far I think--stay tuned
